Neighbourhood Watch Police Advisory

Neighbourhood Watch has advised that the London Police Service is currently investigating a number of complaints in relation to door to door solicitors for charities.  Individuals have been going door to door soliciting funds for well known charities without the sponsorship or knowledge of these charities.  Cheques, made out to various charities, have been deposited into personal accounts by the suspects.

As a matter of policy, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® does not participate in telemarketing or door to door fund-raising campaigns. Should you receive a telephone call or should someone come to your door claiming to be raising funds on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation or a child involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, please get as much information as possible from the solicitor, refuse to donate and contact our office immediately.  Thank you!

The public is reminded that when dealing with unsolicited requests for donations or any type of sales, they should take a number of steps to insure that they ask the right questions to safeguard themselves from unscrupulous criminals.

  • What is the full name of the charity?
  • Is the charity a "registered charity"? If so, what is the charity's registration number?
  • Will I get a receipt for income tax purposes for my donation?
  • What is the mission and goal of the charity?
  • What activities does the charity do?
  • Can you send me more information before I donate? Does the charity have a mailing list or newsletter to which I can subscribe?
  • Do not feel intimidated by high pressure tactics. Be wary of any situation that involves the use of high-pressure tactics.
  • If you want to donate to a worthwhile charity, give to one you know or find out about before you part with your money.
  • Do not pay in cash
  • Ask for a copy of the charity's annual report and some information in writing before making a donation.
